Remand of fifth minor extended, again

Sunday, January 20, 2019, 16:00 A short while ago, by agreement, the Rishon LeTzion Magistrates Court extended the remand of the last of five minors held by the GSS on suspicion of involvement with the rock-throwing incident near Rechalim. Following a dramatic development in the case, contrary to expectations, an indictment was not filed against the minor, and in an unusual manner, the case returned to a deliberation at the Rishon LeTzion Magistrates Court.
This is a most unusual step, especially since the Attorney General’s office formally stated at the last deliberation that an indictment would be filed against the minor today. The remand of the minor has been extended until Wednesday, and during the coming days the Attorney General’s office is expected to examine the claims of the defense and to determine whether or not the minor will be released this week.
Prior to the deliberation, Honenu Attorneys Adi Keidar and Amir Bracha stated that, “Over the past few days the police and the Attorney General’s office have been examining claims that we had raised before them. We hope and expect that these claims will turn the tables on the case. At this stage, in order to preserve the quality of the examination, we cannot elaborate any more than that.”
Honenu Attorney Adi Keidar, who is representing the minor, stated at the end of the deliberation that, “Today the minor’s remand was extended by four additional days. We agreed to the remand extension because the initiative behind the investigative development is, one could say, ours. We raised before the Attorney General’s office and the police certain claims, which at this stage the Attorney General’s office and the police agreed, justifiably, to examine.
“Our expectation is that once the claims are clarified, there will be an interesting result that in my opinion will bring a very interesting drama to the case. At the legal level we want to see how they relate to our claims and I think that if our claims are clarified as justified, the status of the case will completely change. This is a sort of tiebreaker that could conclude with the release of the minor. This is not a trivial matter.”
