Monday, December 11, 2023, 14:03 Yesterday morning (Sunday), despite the absence of a warrant, Yehuda and Shomron Police detectives detained right-wing activist Elisha Yered in the Jordan Valley, where he has been living for the past few months due to a restraining order preventing him from living at his home in the Binyamin region. Major-General Yehuda Fuchs, the GOC of the Central Command, signed the order. The detectives refused to explain why they were detaining Yered and informed him that he was detained for 24 hours.
Today, at a Jerusalem Magistrates Court hearing the police requested a four-day remand extension, which was denied, and Yered was released. Honenu Attorney Nati Rom, who is representing Yered, welcomed the decision: “When the name Elisha Yered comes up, the law books close, logic is discarded, and the actions taken by the establishment are fueled by insane vindictiveness and persecution. The police violated the law and acted without a detention warrant. Major-General Fuchs, the Yehuda and Shomron Police, and the GSS should know that even someone who levels sharp criticism at them and has long side curls also has fundamental rights in a democratic state.”
On Sunday, Honenu Attorney Adi Keidar, who is also representing Yered, stated, “This detention is completely baseless. The GSS initiated a precedential appeal, and the security forces are attempting to arrive at the hearing with an unfair advantage because Yered is under detention. We reason that once the court sees the nature and character of the detention, they will release him and rule that the detention was unjustified. We intend to sue over the matter.”
Several days ago, the GOC of the Central Command, Major-General Yehuda Fuchs, appealed the military court’s decision to reduce the duration of the restraining order preventing Yered from living at his home in the Binyamin region. Following the decision, the order, which is signed by Major-General Fuchs, will expire at the end of this month. This is the first time that a GOC has appealed a military court decision on the matter. Maj.-Gen. Fuchs justified the appeal by claiming that Yered posed a danger to security in the area. He stated “The Swords of Iron War [in Gaza] has increased the risk of violence breaking out in the Yehuda and Shomron regions. Therefore the danger posed by Yered is even greater at this sensitive time.”
