Police agreed to release Kiryat Arba detainee

Monday, June 25, 19:00 After spending last Thursday in remand, the police agreed to release A., the Kiryat Arba resident accused of violating his restraining order, assaulting a policeman and disturbing a policeman in the line of duty, Honenu reports.
Last week as A. was walking through the streets of Kiryat Arba suddenly a police van stopped next to him. Policemen jumped out and began to beat him and spray his face with tear gas. Despite the fact that A. was injured and helpless the policemen continued to beat and choke him as he lay on the street. A nurse who passed by the scene and was shocked by the violence attempted to approach A. in order to examine his injuries but was blocked by the policemen. See here.
A. was taken to the Kiryat Arba Police Station where he was interrogated on suspicion of violating the conditions of his restraining order. Also A. is suspected of assaulting a policeman.
The following day A. was brought to the Jerusalem Magistrate Court where an indictment was filed against him in a accelerated proceeding. Judge Irit Cohen extended A.’s remand until today (Monday), when the supposed evidence in the case was judged.
Honenu attorney David HaLevi, who is representing A., reached an agreement with the police for A.’s release on condition of a restraining order banning him from entering Judea and Samaria and 7,500 NIS bail.
Also A. announced that he intends to file a complaint via “The Organization for Human Rights in Judea and Samaria” against the violent conduct of the police at the time of his detention.
A. has been banned from Judea and Samaria since the last Purim holiday (March 8, 2012) during which Arabs attacked residents of Mitzpe Avichai, an outpost of Kiryat Arba-Hevron. Residents of the community who came out in order to drive away the Arabs encountered an ambush set by the Arabs and left-wing activists who threw rocks at them and photographed the defensive reaction of the Mitzpe Avichai residents. The photographs were presented by the left-wing activists as an attack by the residents of Mitzpe Avichai. Following the incident A. was banned from entering Judea and Samaria.
