Wednesday, September 17, 2025, 16:12 Two years ago, two Arab residents of East Jerusalem attacked a married Hareidi yeshiva student in the Old City of Jerusalem. After the attack, the two assailants were arrested and put on trial in criminal court. One of the assailants was sentenced to four months’ imprisonment. The plaintiff was also awarded NIS 1,000 in compensation. Recently, Honenu Attorney Chayim Bleicher filed an NIS 180,000 civil suit with the Jerusalem Magistrates Court against the two assailants, on behalf of the victim.
In the statement of claim, Attorney Bleicher described the incident: “The defendants were walking from the Hospice Junction in the Old City of Jerusalem toward the Temple Mount, when they noticed the plaintiff walking up the alley in the opposite direction. The defendants stopped and stared at him. After a few moments, they decided to change direction, and followed the plaintiff for several minutes. They intended to attack him due to his Jewish appearance. When the plaintiff approached the exit from the Old City at Sha’ar Shechem [Damascus Gate], he moved aside and motioned to them to allow the defendants to pass. Then, the defendants jumped on him and punched him several times in the head.”
Attorney Bleicher reacted to the incident: “Arabs pursued a Jewish man and brutally attacked him, and this was not an isolated incident. This situation must not be allowed to continue. Attacking and beating Jews is a phenomenon associated with other periods of Jewish history – never again. Demanding a high price from attackers will create necessary deterrence. When we filed the suit, we requested significant punitive compensation. We believe that a civil court, as well as a criminal court, must take part in the fight for independence, security, and peace in our land. The court must exact maximum compensation from the assailants.”
