On Tuesday, February 9, four activists were detained at a demonstration opposite the Police Investigation Unit (PIU) Headquarters in Jerusalem protesting the severe flaws in the investigation of the death of Ahuvia Sandak, z”l. The detainees, three of them minors, were interrogated on suspicion of trespassing and disturbing public order. They were released on condition of being distanced from Jerusalem and from demonstrations for 15 days.
Honenu Attorney Nati Rom is representing the detainees: “Three minors and one adult were detained near the PIU Headquarters as they expressed their objection to the powerlessness of the investigation into the death of Ahuvia Sandak, z”l. The adult was detained only because of his outward appearance. He was documenting the incident with other journalists. This was a false detention. Their protest was protected under freedom of expression and they should not have been detained.”

At a different location in Jerusalem, the String Bridge, four protesters, one of them only 13 years old, were detained at a demonstration at the String Bridge in Jerusalem. Honenu Attorney Rehavia Piltz assisted the detainees. During the previous week, in two separate incidents at a protest at the String Bridge in Jerusalem, a 14-year old minor and a 15-year old minor were detained on Thursday, February 4. Policemen at the site prohibited the demonstrators from using loudspeakers and served tickets for coronavirus regulations violations. (See here for information Honenu has provided to demonstrators concerning their rights, including with regards to coronavirus regulations.) Three days later (Sunday), two minors approximately 15 years of age were detained at a demonstration at the String Bridge in Jerusalem. One of the minors was detained by plain-clothes detectives. A Honenu Attorney provided legal counsel to the detainees.
