Wednesday, January 15, 2020, 17:51 On the afternoon of Wednesday, January 15, the Ofer Military Court of Appeals accepted the appeal filed by the Military Advocate General and imposed a life sentence on one of the murderers of First Sergeant Tuvia Yanai Weisman, Hy”d, who was murdered in a stabbing attack on February 18, 2016, at the Sha’ar Binyamin branch of the Rami Levy supermarket chain.
The terrorist, a 14-year old minor, was convicted of murder and on December 16, 2018, the Military Court in Yehuda handed down a 35-year prison sentence. The Military Advocate General filed an appeal with the Ofer Military Court of Appeals, which was accepted.
Honenu Attorney Chayim Bleicher, who has been assisting the family, stated after the sentencing: “I welcome this important ruling, which constitutes an important precedent for every terrorist being penalized to the full extent of the law, without consideration for extenuating circumstances. A terrorist is a terrorist and he should be fully penalized, even if he is a minor, and it is well that the court ruled thus.” Bleicher added that, “The presence of the victim’s family at the deliberations promoted handing down an appropriate penalty. We take this opportunity to repeat our urgent call to amend the law so that terrorists under the age of 14 may be penalized.”
Ya’el Weisman, Yanai’s widow spoke in court on February 10, 2019, and requested that the court hand down the maximum penalty possible to the minor. On May 5, 2019, Avraham Weisman, Yanai’s father, testified in court against one of the other murderers who was convicted on January 29, 2019, as did Avraham Tal, who was injured in the attack.
