Monday, January 4, 2021, 12:57 Honenu Attorney Chayim Bleicher filed a complaint with the Police Investigation Unit over a serious assault which occurred last week during a peaceful demonstration at the entrance to Kiryat Arba in protest of the death of Ahuvia Sandak, z”l. A Yasam (Special Forces) policeman brutally assaulted an approximately 15-year-old minor as he left the demonstration and started to return to Kiryat Arba.
From the complaint: “On 30/12/2020, at approximately 00:20, my client participated in a peaceful demonstration at the junction leading to Kiryat Arba, ‘Elias Junction’. My client and additional demonstrators stood at the side of the road, behind the guardrail on Route 60, near Elias Junction (the junction at the entrance to Kiryat Arba). At some point and at the request of the police, the demonstrators started to return and to move closer to the junction.
“Whoever wanted to continue returning to Kiryat Arba had to climb over the guardrail and onto the shoulder of the road, because farther on the road, a sewerage ditch prevents passage. My client, who wanted to return to Kiryat Arba, climbed over the guardrail by himself and started to walk back to Kiryat Arba. My client had not walked even a few meters when a Yasam policeman by the name of Ma’or Karavani jumped out at him. Without a word or any gesture, he grabbed my client’s legs, lifted him into the air, and threw him over the guardrail on his head.
“My client, who was in shock, stood up and immediately the same Yasam policeman punched both of his ears. Then the policeman tightly grabbed my client and said, ‘One word and you’ll get another punch.’ Other policemen who witnessed the incident approached the policeman and attempted to calm him. My client is still suffering from headaches and from pains in his ears. This was a serious assault on a minor for no reason.
“The junction is equipped with a network of security cameras for the army and the police. I request that the documentation of the incident be collected before the video clips are deleted. Also the policeman who assaulted [my client] wore a body cam. I request that the video clips from that camera be collected before they are deleted.
“I request that you summon my client to give testimony, and that you take testimony from two 14-year-old witnesses who were standing several meters behind the complainant at the time of the assault,” concluded Honenu Attorney Chayim Bleicher.
