Police extend remand of minors suspected in “price tag” incident

In a deliberation which took place on Monday at the Jerusalem Magistrate Court Judge Avraham Rubin partially accepted the demand of the police and extended until Thursday the remand of the two minors. In the course of the deliberation the police representative refused to present their defense attorney, Honenu attorney Adi Kedar, with any of the evidence in the investigatory file. According to the police representative there is substantial evidence against the two minors linking them to carrying out the act.
The two youths, one of whom is a resident of Betar and the other of the Jewish Quarter of the Old City of Jerusalem, were detained on Sunday and taken to the Central Unit of the Yehuda and Shomron Police in Ma’ale Adumim. The two studied at a yeshiva in the Jewish Quarter until recently. In a discussion with their lawyer the youths said that their interrogation was very general and that they were not informed of any specific incident of which they were suspected.
During the course of the deliberation which took place on Monday morning the police noted that a warrant for detention had been issued already two months ago. The police representative refused to explain why the two were detained only now. In response to a request from the defense that the minors be released to house arrest the police representative refused to explain why their continued remand is necessary in order to continue the investigation. All of the material in the investigation was presented only to the judge, and kept from the detainees and their attorney.
As stated above Judge Rubin extended the remand of the two detainees until this Thursday for the purpose of continuing the investigation. Honenu announced that it plans to file an appeal with the district court on the decision.
Honenu attorney Adi Kedar, the defense attorney of the two detainees, said in response, “At this stage in light of the fact that the police are withholding details even from the suspects concerning the claims against them, we can only wonder why the police delayed carrying out the detention for so long. The warrant was issued already in August and only now has it been carried out, without any claim of difficulty in locating the suspects.”
