Tuesday, March 28, 2023, 16:28 Arabs threw rocks at Jews driving through the town of Hawara on Monday. (See video clips below.) The Jews immediately complained to border police officers at the scene about the lack of security in the town. The police officers then violently detained five of the Jews, one of whom, a married father, had to be evacuated to Beilinson Hospital for treatment of the injuries he sustained from the brutal treatment. Note that Jews drive through Hawara on their way to and from Jewish communities in Gav HaHar as a matter of course.
The following day, a hearing was held at the Petah Tikva Magistrates Court regarding the police request to extend the detainees’ remand. When the detainees arrived at the hearing, it turned out that the police had failed to transfer the investigative files to the court. The police claimed that the files were on their way, but the judge refused to continue the proceedings and ordered the unconditional release of the detainees. Honenu Attorney Assaf Gonen, who is representing the Jews, stated, “I am pleased with the honorable court’s decision to release the detainees unconditionally. The Israel Police must do their job reliably.”
Before the hearing, Attorney Gonen, who accompanied the detainees at the police station the previous night, stated, “It is intolerable when innocent Jews driving on the main road passing through Hawara are repeatedly attacked by Arab rioters and when they complain to the security forces at the scene are then detained and taken to court for remand extensions.
