Wednesday, January 8, 2025, 8:53 A year ago, a Yehuda and Shomron resident was indicted for setting a house on fire in the Arab village of Umm Tzafa in the Binyamin Region after a terrorist murdered four Jews in an attack in Eli in June 2023. The indictment charged him with terror crimes and assault. Recently, the Jerusalem District Court acquitted him of those charges and convicted him of rioting. The conviction was based solely on the presence of the resident at the site.
Honenu Attorney David HaLevi, who is representing the resident, issued a statement: “The suffering my client experienced due to the false, baseless arrest, and throughout the protracted, arduous trial until his long-awaited acquittal is regrettable. From the start, it was obvious that pressure was applied to put my client on trial despite the problematic evidence against him. It was obvious that the identification of my client as a suspect was far from certain, and that the border police officers had lied, coordinated testimonies, and copied police action reports from each other. I am pleased that, in the end, justice came to light, and I welcome the court’s decision.”
