Thursday, October 10, 2024, 18:03 This morning (Thursday), the GSS detained two Yehuda and Shomron residents, one of whom is a minor, as they returned home from Uman at Ben Gurion Airport. The minor was taken in for interrogation by the Yehuda and Shomron Police and forbidden to meet with an attorney. The adult detainee was taken to a police station and then released.
At a court hearing later in the day, the police requested an eight-day remand extension for the minor. However, Jerusalem Magistrates Court Judge Havi Toker released him to house arrest. The police announced that they would appeal the decision. Honenu Attorneys Moshe Poleski and Daniel Shimshilashvili are representing the detainees.
Attorney Shimshilashvili, who is representing the minor stated, “’There are judges in Jerusalem.’ This was a bold decision, well-reasoned, and extremely professional, reminiscent of basic principles that seem to have been forgotten in the GSS dungeons. We will do everything in our power for sanity to prevail and for the minor to be able to observe Yom Kippur with his family. It would be best for the Yehuda and Shomron Police and the GSS to respect the decision that there is no justification for detaining the minor in the GSS dungeons.”
On Tuesday, the GSS detained an additional Shomron resident returning from Uman. Attorney Poleski is representing him, and he has been banned from speaking to an attorney for six days.
Before today’s hearing, the attorneys issued statements.
Attorney Poleski: “On the eve of Yom Kippur, as two youths returned from a trip to Uman, the GSS found it correct to detain them on suspicion of involvement in an incident that occurred several months ago. Arab terror is raging all over Israel, but the GSS is concentrating their efforts on interrogating Jewish youths and detaining them in remand on Yom Kippur. How can we rectify the disgrace?”
Attorney Shimshilashvili: “It is the eve of Yom Kippur, our enemies are rising up against us to destroy us, and there are still those who have not done any soul searching. They are persecuting those who love Israel and build communities by depriving them of their freedom and their fundamental rights. At this very moment, we are working with all legal means to release the detainees immediately.”
