Monday, December 23, 2024, 15:39 One month ago, a Yehuda and Shomron resident was detained on suspicion of assaulting the GOC of the Central Command, Major-General Avi Bluth in Hevron. Honenu Attorney Daniel Shimshilashvilli, who is representing the detainee, appealed the decision to remand him until the end of proceedings. In the appeal, Attorney Shimshilashvilli cited that the detainee told him that he had been abused by police officers: One of the officers handcuffed him in violation of regulations and poured a bottle of urine on him. The appeal further cites that the detainee did not assault either Maj.-Gen. Bluth or any of the officers accompanying him and that the charge accusing him of assaulting police officers at the station is false. Also, the incident must be re-examined in light of the abusive treatment of the detainee. Other Yehuda and Shomron residents were also detained at the incident, handcuffed for hours during the detention, and later released.
Attorney Shimshilashvilli reacted to the groundless detention: “Clear-cut evidence that supports the detainee’s claims against the specific officers who were responsible for his detention was presented in court. The fact that he was deprived of his freedom over a protest, and is still in prison, despite the evidence, indicates that there is discrimination between ‘settlers’ and anarchist protesters. For example, when an anarchist protester threw a flaming torch at a mounted police officer he was quickly released, even though the incident was by all accounts significantly more dangerous than laying a hand on an officer and lightly pushing, as stated in the indictment against my client here. It is becoming obvious to everyone with any sense that changes must be made to the judicial system. All members of Knesset and cabinet ministers in relevant positions are expected to ensure that injustices of this sort are eradicated.”
