Monday November 25, 2024, 16:12 Newly-appointed Defense Minister Yisrael Katz announced last week that administrative detention orders would no longer be served to Jewish Yehuda and Shomron residents. In light of the announcement, Honenu Attorney Adi Keidar wrote a letter to the State Attorney’s office requesting that they ask Defense Minister Katz to release the administrative detainees whom Keidar is representing. The detainees have already been in custody for several months.
In his letter, Attorney Keidar underscored that no evidence against the detainees had been presented, and that continuing their remand would contradict the decision by Minister Katz: “Recently, the Defense Minister ordered a change in policy with regard to administrative detentions. There are current detainees who have already been held behind bars for a prolonged period of time under harsh conditions. We request that you urgently ask the Defense Minister to state his position on the possibility of reducing the current detainees’ remand, and ordering their release prior to the review meeting. We reiterate that some of the detainees do not have criminal records, and some of them are married and have children. There is no doubt that the lengthy remands that have already been served suffice to fulfill the purposes for which they were imposed.”
As of today, eight Jewish Yehuda and Shomron residents are being held in administrative detention, under orders signed by former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant.
