New immigrant, Eli resident arrested on suspicion of damaging Binyamin Territorial Brigade vehicles, detainee denied all charges and supplied alibi

Monday, September 19 14:50 This morning detectives from the National Unit of Serious and International Crime Investigations arrested a non-religious new immigrant from Russia aged approximately 27 residing in Eli on suspicion of being involved with damage caused to vehicles of the Binyamin Territorial Brigade. At approximately 8:30 this morning the National Unit of Serious and International Crime Investigations detectives raided his house and conducted a meticulous search. At the end of the search, the young man was taken by the detectives to their offices in Lod.
The detainee denied all charges and even supplied an alibi. Honenu attorney Adi Kedar arrived at the National Unit of Serious and International Crime Investigations offices in Lod and briefed him.
It should be noted that the members of the family are new immigrants from Russia. The father is deceased and the ailing mother is cared for by her son, who has been arrested. After the arrest the frantic mother, who does not speak Hebrew fluently, phoned the legal headquarters of Honenu and through an interpreter was able to explain what had happened. The detainee’s mother is suffering from severe anxiety after the brutal raid and search.
Currently the interrogation of the detainee has begun and the National Unit of Serious and International Crime Investigations interrogators have not yet decided whether to leave him in remand overnight or to release him at the police station.
Honenu attorney Adi Kedar, who is representing the detainee, reported that, “I spoke to the suspect and he denies all connection to the charges and reported that he was not at the scene at the time. The general impression is that in light of the Police Commissioner’s order that they must solve as many cases as possible concerning mosque arson and damage to IDF property, the Israeli police do not refrain from using any means to satisfy the Police Commissioner, for example the arrest of this man, whom the police themselves know was not involved in any way with the act. I hope that the police will arrive at the proper conclusions and release him.”
A source close to the detainee said that “he is a young, non-religious man, an immigrant from Russia living in Eli and more than a bit of a braggart, who has more than once boasted of things totally unconnected to him. The National Unit of Serious and International Crime Investigations has made a big mistake. The simply have the wrong guy. That’s what happens when they send policemen from Tel Aviv who don’t know the area and base their arrests on eavesdropping. Every kid’s boasting turns into a ‘Margalit Tzan’ani affair’”
