Thursday, August 24, 2023, 15:25 The Ramle Magistrates Court authorized a compromise agreement in which the Lod Police will compensate Honenu Attorney Nati Rom with NIS 7,500 for brutally detaining and handcuffing him when he came to provide legal counsel to Jewish detainees at the Lod Police Station during raging Arab riots in the city during Operation Guardian of the Walls in May 2021. Many Jews were detained while defending their families, their neighbors, and their property. One night, as Attorney Rom was walking into the police station, he encountered a senior police officer (Deputy Inspector General) who ordered him to leave. He explained to the officer he was an attorney assisting detainees at the station, but the officer still violently handcuffed him.
After his detention, Knesset Members Orit Struk and Simha Rotman, who were in Lod, intervened and were instrumental in his release. MK Struk recorded a video clip (see below) at the police station of Attorney Rom explaining how he was groundlessly detained, which was cut off when a police officer swatted away MK Struk’s phone. Attorney Rom was released after being detained for two hours at the police station and later sued the police. Currently, the two sides have come to a compromise agreement. Previously, the police paid 60,000 NIS in compensation to 18 protesters who were illegally detained and handcuffed in Ramle during raging Arab riots in the city during Operation Guardian of the Walls.
Honenu Attorney Menashe Yado, who represented Attorney Rom, stated, “We are awaiting the day that the police will act fearlessly against rioting Arabs and not against Jews because of the threat of Arab rioters. We look forward to a stronger society and a stronger police force.”
Honenu Attorney Nati Rom added, “I am pleased that the police acknowledged their mistake and hope that they will be careful to obey the law. I intend to donate the compensation I was awarded to Honenu and to other worthy causes in Yehuda and Shomron.”
