Monday, October 28, 2024, 13:17 On Monday, the Supreme Court rejected an appeal by the terrorist who stabbed Meir Gabai during Operation Guardian of the Walls (May 2021). The justices upheld the ruling that sentenced the terrorist to five and a half years’ imprisonment.

In May 2021, as Gabai returned home from prayers in the synagogue, a group of Arabs attacked him with rocks as they called out, “Allah akbar.” One of the Arabs stabbed and injured Gabai with a pocketknife as his wife watched the attack from her window.

In June 2023, the Lod District Court convicted the terrorist of aggravated assault and an act of terror. Six months later, the court sentenced him to only five and a half years’ imprisonment. The lenient sentence was handed down despite the terrorist’s prior conviction of several violent acts and his failure to express complete remorse.

Honenu Attorney Chayim Bleicher, who is representing Gabai, said, “The terrorist carried out a serious attack with a disastrous outcome and should have been sentenced to many years’ imprisonment. The court did well to reject his appeal. For the sake of the security of Israeli citizens, we expect penalties for terror attacks to be greatly increased, even when the perpetrators are minors.”
