AG’s office appeals decision in Kfar Duma case

Friday, July 13, 2018, 8:42 The State of Israel filed an appeal on the decision by Central District Court Judge Ami Kobo to release the minor in the Kfar Duma case to house arrest under strict restrictive conditions including surveillance, an electronic ankle cuff, and prohibitions on making contact with certain individuals.
Honenu Attorney Adi Keidar, who is representing the minor, severely criticized the appeal: “We are shocked and astonished by the decision of the Attorney General’s office to file an appeal on the court’s decision. It is unacceptable and an embarrassment that representatives of the State are not honoring and carefully studying the verdict in [Kfar] Duma trial.”
Keidar added that, “We are not at a stage of appeals. We are at the stage at which it has been ruled that after undergoing severe torture, false confessions were extracted from the minor, which have been invalidated. The torture greatly affected him, he suffers from post-traumatic stress and has other symptoms. These factors are not being taken into consideration, and neither is the fact that the Supreme Court already said that it is inconceivable that the minor has remained in detention for years already. This is unbelievable heavy-handedness.
“We will state these things in the strongest manner to the [Supreme] Court and we hope that it will level severe criticism.”
At 11:00 the Supreme Court is expected to rule on the appeal by the State which was filed by Attorney Ya’ir Hamudot, the representative of the Attorney General’s office.

Friday, July 13, 2018, 13:13 At the designated hour (11:00) the justice entered the court for the deliberation, but was unable to begin because the Attorney General’s office had filed the appeal late the previous night without attaching the addenda, including the decision by the Central District Court. The deliberation began a short time ago, after the justice received and read the decision.
