Post on Caspit’s X account based on Shabak leak
Wednesday, August 5, 2026, 9:33 In a defamation lawsuit filed by Elisha Yered against journalist Ben Caspit, court disclosures revealed that the Shabak (GSS) spokesperson’s office had shared confidential criminal-record information about Yered with Caspit. The correspondence showed that the office supplied precise details from protected state databases, including how many times Yered had been detained and the nature of the administrative restraining orders issued against him. In his defense, Caspit confirmed that the Shabak was his source for this information.
Honenu Attorney Menashe Yado is representing Yered in the libel suit.
Caspit used the material to publicly criticize MK Limor Son Har-Melech after she appointed Yered as her spokesperson. Under Israeli law, criminal-registry data is highly sensitive and subject to absolute confidentiality. The Criminal Information and Rehabilitation of Offenders Law allows disclosure only to specific governmental or security bodies listed in the statute, and only for defined purposes. Journalists are not authorized recipients. Transferring such information to an unauthorized person is a criminal offense punishable by up to one year in prison.
Although the Shabak has legitimate access to the registry, the law strictly limits how that access may be used. Providing the data to a journalist therefore crosses a clear legal boundary. Honenu raises serious questions about the episode, asking whether a collaborative working relationship exists between the Shabak and Ben Caspit (and possibly other journalists) for political and parliamentary purposes, a relationship in which the Shabak is allegedly committing criminal offenses.
Attorney Yado stated: “According to Ben Caspit’s own admission, the Shabak provided him with criminal information from Yered’s police registry. This is a criminal offense. Caspit used this information to publicly attack the plan to appoint Yered as spokesperson for MK Limor Son Har-Melech. The serious question that arises is this: Is there a collaborative working relationship between the Shabak and Ben Caspit for political and parliamentary purposes, and within that framework is the Shabak also committing criminal offenses?”
