Head of Shomron Council speaks at protest

Saturday, January 5, 2019, 21:35 Yossi Degan, the Head of the Shomron Regional Council, one of the council heads who participated in the demonstration protesting the revocation of the rights of the minors who have been detained over the past month, spoke: “We will not accept violation of human rights. Human rights are intended for people detained over charges such as these, and by them a system of rule of law is tested, exactly by this point. At the moment the results are ‘fail’. It cannot be that Mafiosos who launch LAU missiles at houses in Netanya, pedophiles and murderers of children are entitled to meet with an attorney, and 15-year old boys from a yeshiva in Yehuda and Shomron are not entitled to an attorney. The function of the law enforcement system and the police is to investigate this incident and they are obligated to do so. However all this must happen while maintaining human rights and the rights of detainees, certainly of detained minors. Therefore we have arrived here to make a clear statement to the Prime Minister, the Justice Minister, and the Public Security Minister, who is in charge of this system. We demand your immediate intervention in this crime and in this trampling of the rights of our residents and of our children. I would like to clarify that we will not sit on the sidelines while our rights are violated. We will not stand off to the side while our children are tortured and their rights are revoked. I call on everyone who regards himself a champion for human rights not to stand on the sidelines when a crime such as this has been carried out in broad daylight.”
