Jerusalem City Council member detained while erasing graffiti

Inflammatory graffiti: Israel wrapped in a keffiyeh

Monday, May 24, 2021, 17:18 On Monday, May 24, Jerusalem City Council member Yonatan Yosef was assaulted by Arabs when he erased inflammatory Arabic graffiti from a public wall in the Shimon HaTzadik neighborhood of Jerusalem. To his surprise, policemen on the scene detained him and not the assailants. It should be noted that Aryeh King, who holds the portfolio of the Environment Committee in the Jerusalem Municipality, had asked the residents of Shimon HaTzadik to assist the municipality and erase the graffiti.
At the time of this posting, Yosef has been held for several hours at the police station on suspicion of defacing property. Honenu Attorney Nati Rom is currently at the police station and assisting Yosef. Rom: “It is incomprehensible that a Jerusalem City Council member and someone else who recorded the incident have been illegally detained for many hours at the Shalem Police Station in Jerusalem. When they were assaulted, the assailants were neither apprehended nor investigated. Whoever actually defaced the property with inflammatory graffiti and damaged the sovereignty of Israel in Jerusalem, a criminal offense, was neither apprehended nor investigated. However, a council member and a photographer who did not do anything wrong but rather did what the municipality and the police should have done, have been illegally detained for many hours.”
17:25 Update: Jerusalem Council Member Yonatan Yosef is being transferred from the Shalem Police Station to a different police station.
