Tuesday, May 13, 2025, 13:09 Yesterday (Monday), six Temple Mount activists brought a young goat to the Temple Mount for the Pesach Sheni sacrifice traditionally performed one month after Passover. The Israel Police detained the activists, and they were brought to the Jerusalem Magistrates Court today.
At the court hearing, the police requested a seven-day remand extension and claimed that the activists had assaulted officers as they entered the Temple Mount. The court rejected the request, pointing out that, “At protests recently held throughout the country, much worse acts were done to officers, and no-one was arrested.”
After the court released the activists, the police announced that they would appeal the decision. Honenu Attorneys Nati Rom and Moshe Poleski, who are representing the activists, issued statements.
Attorney Rom: “The court’s decision is as it should be. It is a shame that instead of studying it and drawing the correct conclusions, the police ran to the District Court in an attempt to achieve a better ruling.”
Attorney Poleski: “The detention serves the public relations needs of the Israel Police, who seem to frequently represent the interests of outside factions. The court ruled that the offenses committed by the activists do not justify detention. The court also noted that protesters accused of the significantly more serious crime of assaulting police officers at protests throughout Israel were released by the courts. Our clients wanted to express a religious stance concerning the policy prevailing on the Temple Mount. The claims by the police of the ‘sensitiveness’ of the incident would have been better left unsaid, especially as we are in the middle of a war started by our enemies who do not need a reason to attack Israeli citizens. The police and the security forces should devote their efforts to combating terror and detaining anyone who even attempts to harm Israeli citizens.”
