Wednesday, December 4, 2024, 16:39 Several days ago, a penalty hearing was held at the Haifa District Court in the case of two terrorists who took part in a brutal attack on Mor Janashvilli in Acco during Operation Guardian of the Walls (May 2021). Janashvilli was seriously injured and evacuated by ambulance to the hospital. At the hearing, the State Attorney’s office announced that they would demand a 13-year prison sentence for the terrorists. Nine terrorists have been arrested for their part in the attack, and some of their cases are still pending. Honenu Attorney Chayim Bleicher is representing Janashvilli.

Some time after the war in the Gaza Strip began, the Prison Service harshened conditions for Arab security prisoners. During the hearing, the terrorists’ attorney revealed what the effects of the policy change were on one of his clients: “The defendant whom I am representing has lost 15 kilograms since the beginning of the war. Before the war, some [Arab prisoners] even requested a transfer to a security prisoners’ wing because of the lenient conditions and the relative freedom that they were given in those wings.”

Attorney Bleicher issued a statement after the hearing: “The reprehensible terrorists brutally attacked Mor, severely injured him physically and psychologically, and now they are pleading with the judge to save them from a long prison sentence. We will insist that the terrorists are put behind bars for their crimes for many years. The statement by the terrorist’s attorney proves the effectiveness of the change in policy by the Prison Service, led by the National Security Minister, Itamar Ben Gvir. Now it is obvious that the soft prison conditions the terrorists received before the change in policy amounted to cheapening the blood of Israeli citizens, and surely instigated acts of terror. We must continue using an iron fist and stiff penalization against terror and anyone who threatens the security of Israeli citizens.”

During Operation Guardian of the Walls (May 2021), Janashvilli was brutally attacked in Acco as he drove to visit his mother. Dozens of Arab rioters pelted his car with large rocks, heavy furniture, and anything else they could get their hands on. Janashvilli lost control of his car, drove it into a wall, and was forced to flee. The Arab mob beat him with clubs and kicked him until he collapsed on the ground in a semi-conscious state. He was saved at the last moment, apparently by Arabs who called the emergency services. He was evacuated by ambulance to the hospital, suffering from bruises on his entire body, broken bones, cuts on his face, partial paralysis in his left leg, headaches, and dizziness. Since the attack, Janshvilli has waged an uncompromising legal battle demanding that all of his attackers be brought to justice.
