Tuesday, March 4, 2025, 17:34 In December 2020, Ahuvia Sandak, z”l, a 16-year-old Jewish youth, was tragically killed in a police-car chase in the Binyamin region. The car Ahuvia was in, with four other youths, overturned when the police car collided with it from behind. The youths, who were injured in the car ramming, have been indicted on various charges.
Over four years after the incident, the Jerusalem District Court sentenced two of the youths to lenient prison terms that were commuted to community service. The cases of the other two youths are still pending. The police officers who rammed the youths’ car were investigated on suspicion of obstructing the investigation, but never put on trial. Honenu Attorneys Moshe Poleski and David HaLevi are representing the youths.
Attorney Poleski commented on the case: “This sad chapter in the history of the State of Israel will be remembered forever as a disgrace. The fundamental rights of the youths were trampled as they found themselves charged and tried. In contrast, the police officers who took part in an illegal car chase that ended with an intentional ramming resulting in Ahuvia’s death were neither tried nor charged. A non-violent conflict between Jewish youths and police officers in the State of Israel should not end in death and injury. The cover up by the police during the investigation of the Sandak case could be what encouraged other violent incidents such as the police shooting near Ramat Gilad last month in which four Jews were injured. Time after time, Yehuda and Shomron residents have their civil rights violated by the Israel Police. The persecution of Yehuda and Shomron residents by the State of Israel must be stopped.”
Since the death of Ahuvia Sandak, z”l, in a police-car chase on 6 Tevet, 5781 (December 21, 2020), Honenu has been representing those who are demanding a judicial investigation of the cause of the death, and also defending the many who are detained while demonstrating for a change in the police behavior that led to the fatal car ramming.
