Thursday, February 22, 2024, 15:33 Honenu Attorney Chayim Bleicher wrote a letter to the Police Prosecution Department requesting that they bring to justice two Arab residents of East Jerusalem suspected of attacking a Jew who recorded them driving a truck into a parked car and damaging it. The suspects ordered the Jew to delete the video clips that he had recorded. When he refused, they brutally attacked and threatened him, then grabbed his phone in an attempt to delete the video clips. After the assault, the suspects fled the scene in their truck. The assault victim followed the suspects in his car and at some point, passed the truck and blocked it. In response, one of the suspects got out of the truck and threw rocks at him, causing injury. The police arrested the assailants, partly thanks to evidence from the camera mounted on the victim’s car. The Police Prosecution Department filed an indictment against one of the suspects, and his remand has been extended until the end of proceedings.
Attorney Bleicher described the attack in his letter: “On February 11, 2024, my client was attacked by a truck driver and his friend in the Ramat Shlomo neighborhood of Jerusalem. In the course of the attack, my client was hit on the back of his neck, threatened, and coerced to delete video clips from his phone. [The threats included] racial slurs such as ‘Jew, delete [the clips] or else I’ll kill you.’ Following that, as they were driving on Begin Boulevard, [the Arabs] threw rocks at my client’s car. My client’s leg was injured in the attack. … This was a serious assault on a citizen who came to the aid of others. He was brutally attacked with no cause, threatened with murder, and racial slurs were directed at him. No less serious is the additional crime of endangering human life in a traffic lane. We, with the victim, intend to follow the proceedings to ensure that the assailants are penalized to the full extent of the law.”
Honenu Attorney Chayim Bleicher commented on the case: “Unfortunately, Jews experience brutal attacks at the hands of Islamist assailants who take advantage of every opportunity to injure and humiliate their victims. We must not accept this situation. We must act with all legal means to eradicate violence and deter assailants. We will follow the criminal case and demand maximum sentences for the assailants. Afterward, we will sue for damages in civil proceedings to compensate the victim and to attain deterrence.”
