Monday, August 28, 2023, 15:34 Three years ago, a 71-year-old Jewish man and his grandson were assaulted by an Arab in the Old City of Jerusalem on the eve of the Shavuot holiday (that year May 28-29). The assailant was detained, released, and later indicted for simple assault after Honenu successfully demanded that the police reopen the case. Honenu Attorney Chayim Bleicher, who initially represented the victims, wrote in the demand, “[An Arab] approached him [the grandfather] and spit at his back, only because he was a Jew with a Jewish appearance. My client’s clothing was stained by the large amount of phlegm.” In the end, a three-month suspended sentence was handed down to the assailant. Currently, Honenu Attorney Menashe Yado has filed a 30,000 NIS civil suit against the assailant on behalf of the victims.
The indictment stated that on May 28, 2020, the defendant noticed the complainant and his grandson as they were passing by on HaGai Street in the Old City of Jerusalem. After they had passed, the defendant spat at the complainant.”
After the civil suit was filed, Attorney Bleicher stated, “It is disgraceful for an elderly, distinguished Jewish man who fought in most of Israel’s wars to be attacked while walking with his grandson in Jerusalem. One must not tolerate terror or the terrorists who constantly try to force Jews out of the capital city of Israel. The assailant humiliated and denigrated a Jew – and he will pay a high price for his acts so that others will ‘see and fear’.”
