Tuesday, February 9, 2021, 10:56 On the morning of Tuesday, February 9, Jerusalem Magistrates Court Judge Eliad Weinshall held a deliberation to continue the follow-up of the investigation of the death of Ahuvia Sandak, z”l, in a police car chase. In the framework of the proceedings, Judge Weinshall serves as an investigative judge examining the circumstances of Ahuvia’s death, following a request filed by Honenu Attorney Ariel Atari on behalf of the Sandak family. The deliberation took place despite the objection of the Attorney General’s office to the court’s appointment of itself as the investigative judge who will be involved with the investigation of the death of Ahuvia Sandak, z”l.
The deliberation is a continuation of the previous deliberation (January 13) at which Judge Weinshall stated that he would follow the progress of the investigation of the death of Ahuvia. In preparation for the deliberation, Judge Weinshall ordered that entire investigative file be transferred to him for examination, and on Sunday, January 31, the Attorney General’s office did so.
During the deliberation, and also in his decision, Judge Weinshall asked the representative of the Attorney General’s office for clarification regarding several points of the investigation. Judge Weinshall ruled that an additional deliberation will take place in approximately one month’s time and he will continue to examine and assess how the investigation is being handled.
At the deliberation the representative of the Attorney General’s office said that the case file was on the desk of the Deputy Attorney General who recently entered the position and that several meetings had taken place at the Attorney General’s office during which the Police Investigation Unit (PIU) was asked for more information to complete the investigation. The representative also said that contrary to various publications in the news media, decisions in the case have not yet been made and the investigation is in its last stage. It will be approximately one more month before decisions are made in the case.
Honenu Attorney Ariel Atari, who is representing Ahuvia’s parents, stated: “We were happy to hear today that following our request to appoint a judge to investigate the circumstances of Ahuvia Sandak’s death, the Deputy Attorney General is involved with the case and is examining the evidence. We were pleased to discover that there are proceedings of a substantial examination of the work by the Attorney General’s office and the PIU in the framework of the investigation. We hope very much that in the end this will lead to a genuine investigation into the circumstances of the death of Ahuvia, z”l. The court demonstrated great familiarity with the case, which is very important in cases such as this, and we welcome it.”
