Monday, October 24, 2022, 17:02 On Monday, October 24, the Jerusalem District Court convicted Ali Ajalin, the terrorist who attempted to stab two Hareidi men on HaNevi’im Street in Jerusalem approximately one year ago. He admitted to attempting to stab the two victims and was convicted of aggravated assault in an act of terror in accordance with crimes that the Jerusalem District Attorney’s office attributed to him. When the indictment was filed, Honenu Attorneys Chayim Bleicher and Ophir Steiner requested that the charge be changed to attempted murder. The request was refused.
Honenu Attorney Chayim Bleicher, who is representing the victims, said in response, “The terrorist attempted to murder Jews because of their Jewishness and their nationality. Thank G-d, the terrorist did not succeed in carrying out his plot. The victims were caused severe traumatic damage. We regret that despite our request, the terrorist was not charged from the start with attempted murder in an act of terror. However, the severity of the act still stands, and we expect the Jerusalem District Attorney’s office and the court to impose a very stiff penalty on the terrorist.”
Approximately one year ago, Ajalin, then a 22-year-old Anata resident, left his home with a kitchen knife with a 12 cm. blade and looked for a Jewish victim in the area of Sha’ar Shechem (Damascus Gate). He identified two Jews with a Hareidi appearance walking from Sha’ar Shechem toward Shivtei Yisrael Street. The terrorist followed them until they reached HaNevi’im Street, where he drew his knife and attempted to stab one of them in the back. The terrorist tripped and the knife fell from his hand, which enabled the victims to escape. The terrorist fled the scene and was apprehended a short time later by the police.
