Sunday, November 6, 2022, 18:13 The Jerusalem District Court ordered the remand of Mohamed Abu Ghanam extended until the end of proceedings against him. He was indicted for torching Rabbi Dov Lior’s car in the Beit Orot neighborhood of Jerusalem in July 2022.
The indictment states that on the night of July 21, Abu Ghanam unsuccessfully attempted to set a car on fire in a parking lot in the Beit Orot neighborhood of Jerusalem. The following morning, he returned to the area, first to the Rockefeller Museum, an archeological museum affiliated with the Israel Museum, and threw a Molotov cocktail toward the gate of the museum, which set a garbage can on fire. He continued to the Beit Orot parking lot and set a car belonging to Rabbi Dov Lior on fire, burning it completely.
The indictment charges Abu Ghanam with arson, two counts of attempted arson, manufacturing weapons, and racially motivated malicious vehicular vandalism. The office of the State Attorney requested the remand of the defendant until the end of proceedings against him and the court agreed.
Honenu Attorney Chayim Bleicher, who represented Rabbi Lior, stated, “This was an extremely serious incident that could have killed families. We welcome the Jerusalem District Court’s decision and expect that the sentence imposed on the terrorist will reflect the severity of the incident.”
