Sheikh Omar Abu Sara’a convicted of incitement to injure Jews

Monday, March 28, 2016, 10:47 On the morning of Monday, March 28 Sheikh Omar Abu Sara’a was convicted of incitement to injure Jews in his sermons given on the Temple Mount. Honenu is pleased by the conviction and hopes that the verdict will be a significant deterrent.
In December 2014 Honenu Attorney Hur Uriel Nizri filed a complaint against the sheikh’s sermons on behalf of Rabbi Yehuda Glick, a short time after the assassination attempt on the rabbi. In early January 2015 Sheikh Abu Sara’a was detained and on January 21, 2015 the Attorney General’s office filed an indictment against him.
Honenu: “Thank G-d the complaints we filed on incitement to injure Jews are yielding results. Sheikh Abu Sara’a is the second sheikh to have been detained and convicted following our complaints. However, unfortunately we have seen that when it comes to incitement to injure Jews, sufficient action is taken only when private citizens and various organizations file complaints. We hope that this will change and that the police and the Attorney General’s office will begin to carry out their duties in a reliable manner.”
Rabbi Yehuda Glick: “I am pleased that in the State of Israel, despite the fact that it took a long time, and the justice mills grind slowly, there are people who care and took the trouble to file complaints about incitement to injure Jews, and that the system, in the end, is dealing with the matter. I hope that [Sheikh Abu Sara’a] will receive the penalty he deserves and that others will be deterred, and that the Temple Mount will go back to being a center of peace and not a center of incitement.”
Two weeks prior to Sheikh Abu Sara’a’s conviction, on March 14, 2016, the Jerusalem Magistrate Court convicted Sheikh Khaled Al-Mughrabi of incitement following complaints, see here and here, filed by Honenu.
