Wednesday, June 21, 2023, 13:27 The Ramle Municipality will dedicate a square in the name of Destau Bisset, Hy”d, to commemorate two years since his murder during Arab riots in the city. The square is close to the site of his murder. Since Destau’s murder, the Bisset family has waged a determined campaign for the capture and prosecution of his murderers. Despite the length of time that has passed until now, the murderers have not been apprehended and the GSS has not acceded to the demand by the Bisset family for their involvement in the investigation. Recently, Honenu sent a letter to Defense Minister Yoav Gallant on behalf of the Bisset family asking him to recognize Destau as a victim of terror.

Prior to the dedication, the Bisset family stated, “For two years, day in and day out, we have been waging a campaign to bring justice to light. We wrote to all of the law enforcement authorities and all of the government ministers. Not only have the law enforcement authorities dragged their feet since the murder and not made an adequate effort to apprehend the murderers and bring them to trial, but also the previous government, despite our repeated requests, did not do anything to solve the murder case. This shameful failure left the murderers of our father Destau completely free. In all of this never-ending suffering, the commemoration of our father’s legacy in a square that will bear his name gives us slight relief.

“We will continue to fight for the apprehension of the murderers and their prosecution. We repeat our demand that the GSS be involved in the investigation of the murder and that the Defense Minister recognize our father as a victim of terror. We demand that the government ministers and the Prime Minister get to the bottom of the matter and bring the contemptible murderers to trial. We hope that this time, our extremely basic demands will reach listening ears and we will finally receive justice,” concluded the family.

Honenu Attorney Chayim Bleicher, who is representing and assisting the Bisset family, added, “The failure to recognize Destau Bisset, Hy”d, as a victim of terror, is a disgrace for the State of Israel. Destau, Hy”d, made every sacrifice to come with his family from Ethiopia on Aliya to Israel. Here, in Israel, he sacrificed his life because he was a Jew—and the State refuses to recognize his cause of death. As a native citizen of Israel, I am embarrassed by what the family and the community of the deceased have experienced since the attack. The terrorists have not been brought to justice because of a monumental failure: During the week after the attack, it was not investigated. Now, the State of Israel is ensuring that the family will pay the full price for the failures of the State’s investigation. This is a disgrace.”

Destau Bisset, Hy”d, a 74-year-old Ramle resident, was run over by two Arabs riding electric bicycles in Ramle in May 2021, during Operation Guardian of the Walls, and succumbed to his injuries approximately three weeks later. Eyewitnesses to the incident stated that the cyclists intentionally collided with Bisset, attempted to run over people waiting at a bus station, and then fled the scene.
